Album, Cleveland, 2016. These two boys in creepy Trump masks, standing by the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, provided what was, for me, the most chilling image of the Republican National Convention in 2016, but it was not the only one. Bikers and others walking around with rifles, (Ohio is an open-carry state) the media mega-circus and the presence of thousands of cops from all over the country all contributed to the surreal atmosphere. This against the backdrop of a ghost city whose population has shrunk by two thirds since its 1950 high. The eerie, empty, abandoned quality of Cleveland’s downtown, so lonely block by shuttered block, would suddenly give way to the raucous, clinking sound of delegates and their two-for-one drinks specials on 4th Street, the town’s sole party street. These are some of my favorite images from that lonely circus week.
